Friendly bacteria, superfoods, cholesterol busting spreads, 99% germ free, whiter than white! It's almost impossible to find a product in the supermarket today that doesn't come with impressive claims. Scientific claims, with an inflated price tag to match. Are they oversold? Or are they worth the extra cash? Prof Lesley Regan has already exploded some of the myths behind beauty products in a previous Horizon. From organic farm produce to the billion dollar brands of the UK's major manufacturers Prof Regan asks tough questions and gets surprising answers. And there's no sitting on the fence: a product is either 'in' or 'out' of her scientifically backed supermarket trolley.

Health claims on food labels are claims by manufacturers of food products that their food will reduce the risk of developing a disease or condition. For example, it is claimed by the manufacturers of oat cereals that oat bran can reduce cholesterol, which will lower the chances of developing serious heart conditions. In the United States, these claims, usually referred to as 'qualified health claims', are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration in the public interest. In the United Kingdom, the law requires that any health claim on food labels must be true and not misleading. Food producers may optionally use the Joint Health Claims Initiative to determine whether their claims are likely to be legally sustainable. An overview about the current and future situations on health claims in the European Union including proposals, press releases and memos can be found at the website of the European Commission.

Many people struggle to control their metabolism in an effort to lose weight. Now, researchers are saying that eating nuts, despite their high fat and calorie content, could be a good way to trick your metabolism. In fact, studies have shown the more nuts in the diet, the lower the body mass index or BMI. Most of the trials have had people follow their customary diet, or their customary diet with nuts incorporated in. Inclusion of nuts in the diet did not promote weight gain. Mattes, who studies why people feel hungry and how they feel full, explains this nutty pattern. They make you feel full, and when you incorporate them into your diet, you spontaneously eat less of other foods in the diet. Furthermore, nuts aren't absorbed completely, and they make your body burn energy.
Changing people’s Metabolism is not a trivial matter. Fat people often claim that their metabolism is different from leaner folk. A vaccine that could put that right would have the punters clamouring. But we should beware of the obesity panic driving us into medical solutions until we are really sure that the cure is safe. Being fit is more important than not being fat, as an abundance of evidence has shown.
In the not too distant past, nuts were considered unhealthy because of their relatively high fat content. Although the fat content of nuts is relatively high, most of the fats in nuts are the healthier monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. The term 'nuts' includes almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, pistachios, walnuts, and peanuts. Despite their name, peanuts are actually legumes like ![]()
Energy Metabolism is the process of cells burning food to produce energy. This is similar to a car's engine burning gasoline to produce the energy that is used to rotate the car's wheels. The cell’s mitochondria acts as the car’s engine, the food we eat acts as the gasoline, and the energy we need to move and think is similar to the energy used to move the car. DCA (Dichloroacetate) has been found to stimulate energy metabolism.
Cell Metabolism is the process by which individual cells process nutrient molecules. Metabolism has two distinct divisions: Catabolism and Anabolism. Complex sugars consumed by the organism can be broken down into a less chemically-complex sugar molecule called glucose. Once inside the cell, glucose is broken down to make adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a form of energy, via two different pathways. The first pathway, glycolysis, requires no oxygen and is referred to as anaerobic metabolism. The second pathway occurs inside the mitochondria and is capable of generating enough ATP to run all the cell functions (![]()
All living things are made up of cells. Some organisms, like bacteria are only as big a single cell. Humans are made up of many different kind of cells. Cells help our body works. Fantastic animation of the inside of a cell.
I’m obviously not a fan of microwaves to heat or cook your food, but researchers have found one good use for them: killing germs on your kitchen sponge as a pathogen killer application. After soaking sponges and scrubbers in dirty water the researchers found just two minutes in the microwave was enough to kill 99 percent of the living pathogens. Zapping sponges in the microwave every other day will decontaminate them better than simply putting them in the dishwasher, and you should wet them first, as the heated water seemed to help the sterilization process.
People believe that when they get a cough or cold or flu that it's due to some big, bad bug that got them, some virus or some really horrible bacteria. And yes, these infectious agents do play a role in getting an infection. But it's really important to understand that it's mostly not related to the infectious agent so much as it is to our behavior, specifically behavioral and lifestyle choices.
Typically, shopping cart handles in either grocery or department stores are one of the most infected surfaces in any community. Now, in your own homes the first one that often comes to mind might be your toilet seat. Well, there are a few areas that are much more infected than your toilet seat, and one would be your kitchen sink. Another though, especially if you're a big computer user like me, is your keyboard, which rarely gets cleaned. There are some simple steps to take to clean it, which I'll show you shortly. Through trial and error, and ruining shirts, I learned that ![]()
Although previous studies strongly indicated that some flavanol-rich foods, such as wine, tea and cocoa can offer cardiovascular health benefits, we have been able to demonstrate a direct relationship between the intake of certain flavanols present in cocoa, their absorption into the circulation and their effects on cardiovascular function in humans. The results of this study provide direct proof that epicatechin is, at least in part, responsible for the beneficial vascular effects that are observed after the consumption of certain flavonol-rich cocoas.
Chocolate elevates your Mood! They say chocolate makes you feel good because it has an appealing flavor and a rich mouthfeel. The healthiest chocolate is most probably the darkest one with 50+ cocoa quality. And now Mars Inc., is claiming health benefits with CocoaVia. Products high in flavanols, an antioxidant found in cocoa beans that is thought to have a blood-thinning effect similar to aspirin and may even lower blood pressure.
In this video, I'll be showing you one of my favorite concoctions: Raw-Milk Hot Chocolate. Don't worry though. Healthy hot chocolate does not equal 'taste free'! You can warm the raw milk up gently like Luci did but make sure not to excede 120 degrees F or you start killing off beneficial bacteria. Sounds yummy and healthy. I make cold chocolate milk for my grandson with the same recipe minus the water and extract, except I substitute half of a banana for theBe kind to yourself when you practice yoga. Go slowly, especially in the beginning, and listen to your body. It knows what it can do. If it says 'stop', stop. Don't push it. Yoga is not a competitive sport. You don't win points for matching a picture on a website. If you push too hard, you probably won't enjoy it, and you may hurt yourself. Whenever possible, work with a teacher, and use books, videos and websites to supplement your classroom instruction. Most of all, stick with it. If you practice, you will improve. And you will feel better.
As we continued our conversation, videos and getting in shape surfaced, and I thought how cool would it be to send him a video so that he could do yoga! He’d never done yoga before. So I kinda got something simple done, it was really meant just for him, so he could feel comfy at doing the practice. I thought, how cool would it be if he could send me a corresponding video, so that I could watch him to see how he was doing. Well, lo and behold, he did such a good job at it! So good in fact that I gave him permission to use the video on his site and all. Here it is. check it out.
To be clear about who you are is truly a gift, it’s a gift that never ceases to be unwrapped, and as one unwraps one finds that the gift within also changes. If I had been asked even just a couple of years ago something about myself, the words that would have poured out would have been far, far different than those that come to my mind now. What I know is that what you do is a reflection of who you are, that always you must seek to find out all the things that you are before clearly ![]()
New guidelines from the American Cancer Society (ACS) recommend that women at high risk of breast cancer have annual MRIs in addition to annual mammograms. The women affected by these new guidelines are those age 30 or over who have a known mutation in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes that puts them at higher than normal risk of breast cancer. In addition, the recommendations apply to any woman who has been treated with radiation to the chest for ![]()
It's interesting, every time I publish an article about coconut oil, I get emails from people, usually new readers, who are saying: Why are you recommending coconut oil? My doctor tells me this is terrible for your heart! And I tell them: Look, I eat coconut oil every single day, and you can see my health statistics. I don't have any cardiovascular problems. Why do you think this myth is so widespread? Why do you think the myth about ![]()
Coconut and coconut butter (also referred to as coconut oil) has been used as a food and medicine since the dawn of history. Unlike saturated animal fats found in meats and dairy products, coconut butter is a raw saturated fat containing mostly medium-chain fatty acids which the body can metabolize efficiently and convert to energy quickly. Coconuts may help lower cholesterol and regulate thyroid function.
What do you do for body lotion, most lotions have soybean products in them? Would it be just as hazardous to use those lotions as it is to eat soy? The safest moisturizer that I recommend is pure coconut oil. It is inexpensive and all natural - the important point that needs to be understood is that anything applied to the skin is absorbed by the body and processed through the organs. Think twice before you apply any topical lotions or moisturizers to your skin as the substance will be absorbed by your body!
DCA (Dichloroacetate) can repair damage to mitochondria affected by cancer, creating large decreases in cancerous tumors. Positive results from the drug were shown in both animal model tests and test tubes. It also has been tested on genetically cultured human cells. Most importantly, DCA (Dichloroacetate) can kill cancerous cells, including the often unstoppable lung cancer, without affecting other healthy cells and tissues, which differs DCA (Dichloroacetate) from many chemotherapies.
Cancer cells actively suppress their mitochondria, which alters their metabolism, and this appears to offer cancer cells a significant advantage in growth compared to normal cells, as well as protection from many standard chemotherapies. Because mitochondria regulate cell death (Apoptosis), cancer cells can thus achieve resistance to apoptosis, and this appears to be reversed by ![]()
Cancer treatment could be on the brink of a revolution following a study showing that it may be possible significantly to improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy drugs without causing side effects. The breakthrough was made possible with a revolutionary medical technique called RNA interference. The development offers hope that the gruesome side effects of chemotherapy, suffered by tens of thousands of cancer patients, may at some point become a thing of the past.
